Cool Metal Roofing
Whirlwind offers a vast selection of cool metal roofing options designed to keep energy costs down by reflecting the sun's heat back into the atmosphere rather than transferring it into the building below. Qualified cool roof products can reduce peak cooling demand by 10-15% and can decrease the heat transferred into a building substantially.
How Does Cool Roofing Work?
A cool roof is one that reflects the heat emitted by the sun back into the atmosphere, keeping the the temperature of the roof lower and thus reducing the amount of heat transferred into the building below. A roof's coolness is determined by two properties, solar reflectance (SR) and thermal emittance (TE), both of which are factored on a scale from 0 to 1, with 1 being the most reflective or emissive.
Whirlwind’s feature color that meets all requirements for Title 24, ENERGY STAR® , and CRRC (Cool Roofing Rating Council) is Cool White. Cool White has a reflectivity rating of 0.75, an emissivity rating of 0.86, and a total reflective index of 91.7. In addition to Cool White, Whirlwind also offers Solar White, which has a reflectivity rating of 0.7, an emissivity rating of 0.85, and a total reflective index of 85.1.
Benefits of Cool Metal Roofing
Whirlwind has implemented a comprehensive green building initiative to reduce the negative impacts of building construction, design, maintenance and deconstruction on the environment. Cool roofs are an integral element of green building as they benefit the consumer, the building owner and the environment in many ways:
- Energy savings: Cool roofs reflect the sun's energy back into the sky, thereby reducing heat conduction into a building and lowering cooling costs
- Reduced maintenance: Cool roofs have been shown to prolong the lifespan of a roof by staving off degradation caused by ultraviolet and infrared radiation
- Recycled materials: Cool metal roofs are manufactured with recycled scrap materials and are designed to be fully recycled at the end of their lifespan
